The theme at church beginning next week is “Re-Entry”. Tonight I’ve been thinking about what that means. When I think of re-entry, I think of fall. To me it's always a season of re-entry, whether that’s "back to school" or just back to regular routine. It's a return to normal life after holidays and summer fun. In spite of the return to normal, it really is my favourite season and time of the year.
Re-entry into school means starting new classes, finding new friends, getting lost in a maze of classrooms and people. But it also means refreshing the mind to remember what was learned last year, and adding to it the new information taught now.
Working where I do, re-entry has a huge impact on many that I work with. Whether it’s those who have participated in a short-term overseas assignment, or those returning after serving for an extended period of time, re-entry is a major time of transition, of adjustment to North American culture and excess, and usually of reverse culture-shock.
What’s been on my mind this evening as I think about re-entry is “back to the basics”, remembering and reiterating who God is, and who I am in light of who God is. This is the grounding basis from which everything else grows. Once that is firm, we can branch out into other things. But first things come first.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:1-2)
